The album "Stopan" by the band Oratnitza is a bouquet of Bulgarian folk songs, original compositions, and ancient Eastern poetry, reimagined in new arrangements. This album marks the band’s impressive return after an eight-year hiatus. Although their sound has evolved considerably and now incorporates more electronic breakbeat and techno elements, it remains true to Oratnitza’s organic character and distinctive sonic identity. The title "Stopan" comes from Bulgarian mythology. This is what our ancestors called the non-venomous snake known as the grass snake, which they regarded as the guardian of the home. The stopan, or household guardian snake, is said to be found sleeping beneath the threshold of a house, among the roots of a tree, or guarding a bridge or a well—all important places connected to everyday human life. In folklore, the snake is also an animal that can inhabit both the world of the living and the afterlife. In this sense, it symbolizes the connection between the living and the dead, and between the past, present, and future.
